At Dorset Photographic we can make high resolution digital scans of 35mm, medium format and large format negatives and slides. We can also scan photographic prints up to A4 in size. For photos larger than A4 we can use a full-frame camera to create a digital file (please see our Artwork Photography page for details).
We always strive to create the best quality digital scan, however scanning resolutions and final image size may vary according to what we consider would best suit the original image, taking into account the quality of the supplied print, negative or slide. As a guide, we have listed some typical scanning resolutions and final image sizes below. Please just let us know if you require a specific image size and resolution.
35mm negatives and slides are scanned at 4,800 dpi to give an image size of approximately 21” x 13” at 300 dpi.
6cm x 6cm medium format negatives and slides are scanned at 2,400 dpi to give an image size of approximately 18” x 18” at 300 dpi.
Photographic prints are scanned at a suitable dpi to produce an approximate image size of A4 at 300 dpi.
Overview of Retouching
Pricing a retouching job is notoriously difficult because until we have scanned a negative or slide or seen the print it’s hard to determine how much time is required for the restoration. Our flat rate price for retouching is therefore based on the average time required to perform a good quality retouching and restoration service.
The retouching service includes dust, scratch and crease removal, contrast & brightness adjustments, colour correction where possible on colour images and anything else we are able to do to improve the quality of the image.
